Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship

In the summer of 2020 between my first and second years of college, I was fortunate enough to participate in the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program (SURF). The program was hosted through the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC). The initial plan when I first signed up for the SURF program was to either continue research with my RaMP mentor, however, since COVID-19 hit the program had to be continued online. The program consisted of various professors, doctorates, and research professionals offering talks about their research and the programs offered at their respective universities. I learned about the vast opportunities that are offered by universities around the country and gained information on how medical school interviews are conducted. One class I attended discussed the intricacies involved in the writing of scientific articles. We went over several different research articles and I learned how to effectively read and understand the information presented in those articles. Another class I attended discussed how the MD/Ph.D. program works and the requirements to pursue one. Overall, I gained huge insight into the scientific research environment and developed a larger appreciation for professionals in the research field. Participating in the SURF program allowed me to learn a variety about medical programs that I can pursue in the future.
